Orangutan Privacy Policy
This Privacy Policy explains how Eratosthenes ("we", "us", "our") handles information in the Orangutan mobile app (iOS and Android) and web application.
Scope
This policy applies to the Orangutan mobile app (iOS and Android), web app, and related documentation or support channels.
Information We Collect
The Orangutan mobile app is designed as an offline-first application. Depending on how you use the app, we may collect:
- Information you provide directly, such as item titles, authors, creators, and custom notes.
- Content you create in the app, such as library items, ratings, shelves, and organizational tags.
- Technical information such as device type and app interaction patterns (only when analyzing crashes or performance).
How We Use Information
We use information to:
- Provide and maintain app functionality.
- Improve product reliability, performance, and user experience.
- Support security, abuse prevention, and troubleshooting.
- Communicate product updates and service notices.
Local Storage and Client Data
The Orangutan mobile app stores all data locally on your device. No data is sent to our servers unless you explicitly opt into cloud sync features.
The web app may store data in your browser (for example, local storage) to support local-first behavior and a better user experience.
You can clear app-stored data through your device settings, or clear browser-stored data through your browser settings. This will permanently remove your app data.
Server Connectivity and API Calls
The app does not require network connectivity and does not contact any servers for core functionality (add, edit, delete library items). No data leaves your device.
Cloud sync and user accounts require server connectivity and explicit user opt-in.
Sharing of Information
We do not sell or share personal information unless directly authorised by users.
Data Retention
Local Storage: All data is retained exclusively on your device for as long as you keep the app installed. Uninstalling the app will permanently delete your library data.
Cloud Storage: We will retain cloud-synced data for as long as necessary to provide services, and comply with legal obligations.
Security
We use reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational safeguards. No security method is perfect, and we cannot guarantee absolute security. Because local data remains on your device, the security of your library depends on the security of your device itself.
Children
The service is not directed to children under 13 (or higher age thresholds where required by local law). We do not knowingly collect personal data from children in violation of applicable law.
Your Choices and Rights
Depending on your location, you may have rights such as access, correction, deletion, portability, or objection to certain processing.
International Users
Because local data remains exclusively on your device, there are no international data transfer concerns for the core functionality. If you use cloud-enabled features, your information may be processed in jurisdictions with different data protection laws.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by updating the effective date and, where appropriate, through additional notice.
